The Bagpipe Solutions Kit includes book 1 and a Pipers' Choice regular length practice chanter with a reed. This kit is everything you need to get started playing the bagpipes.
Book 1 – Preliminary Level
This tutor book is the first in the light music series and has been designed to give the outright beginner
sufficient exposure to the art of learning how to play the bagpipe so that they can decide if they would like to
continue before any large expenses are involved.
By the completion of the level, you will:
- Be able to maintain (at a basic level) your practice chanter and practice chanter reed
- Understand basic elements of music theory
- Be able to reproduce basic simple time rhythms
- Understand some of the critical aspects inherent with playing on a practice chanter and with playing
bagpipe music in general
- Be able to read the nine notes played on a bagpipe
- Be able to apply good fingering technique when playing your practice chanter
- Be able to play simple scalic exercises on your practice chanter
- Understand how to achieve a good tone when playing your practice chanter
- Be able to complete a basic level of ear training
- Know some key exercises to stretch your fingers, hands, shoulders and forearms
On average, a student should be able to complete all of the requirements contained in this tutor book within
one to two months.
There are no prerequisites to begin the training at this level. Anyone who has an interest in learning how to
play the bagpipe, regardless of whether they have had any previous bagpipe training or any musical training
for that matter, will be able to work their way through this volume.

Bagpipe Solutions Book 2 – Beginner Level
This tutor book is the second in the light music series and has been designed to provide the beginner piper
with a basic outline of the information and skills needed to play a bagpipe tune.
By the completion of the level, you will:
- Be able to maintain (at a more complete level) your practice chanter and practice chanter reed
- Be able to play more complex scalic exercises
- Understand the theory behind how to complete the attack and the cut-off
- Be able to play all of the technical movements (or embellishments) that are used when playing
bagpipe music, including understanding:
- The correct sound of each movement
- Where the beat falls when each movement is played
- Be able to reproduce more complex time and rhythm exercises
- Know more complex aspects of music theory
On average, a student should be able to complete all of the requirements contained in this tutor book within
three months.

Bagpipe Solutions Book 3 – Advanced Beginner Level
This tutor book is the third in the light music series and has been designed to provide the beginner piper with
all of the remaining information and skills needed to play a bagpipe tune.

Know more complex aspects of music theory

Bagpipe Solutions Book 6 – First Player Level
This tutor book is the sixth in the light music series and has been designed to help the piper make the
transition to playing on their bagpipe.
By the completion of the level, you will:
- Have transferred all the skills that you have learned so far in the earlier levels onto your bagpipe
- Have a basic knowledge of how to set up and maintain your bagpipe, drone reeds and pipe chanter
reed, including:
- How to fit the bagpipe to the player
- Being able to maintain and care for your bagpipe
- Being able to select, maintain and care for your three drone reeds and your pipe chanter reed
- Have improved your ability to complete (on your bagpipe) the coordination of blowing and squeezing,
so that you can now complete all of the technical and tonal requirements, on your bagpipe
- Learn the theory of tuning and how to complete the first stages in bagpipe tuning, including:
- Pitching your pipe chanter
- Tuning your three drones
- Tuning your drones to Low A
- Be able to reproduce more complex time and rhythm exercises
- Have improved your ability to write out (copy) bagpipe music

Bagpipe Solutions Book 7 – Second Player Level
This tutor book is the seventh in the light music series and has been designed to provide the piper new to the
bagpipe, make the transition to being able to:
- Compete in a Grade 5 solo piping contest, and/or
- Play in a pipe band – during a street parade, or in the massed bands at a highland games.
To achieve these goals, you will develop your ability to:
- Play the technical requirements needed for this level and increase your speed and fingering dexterity
- Pitch your pipe chanter and tune your drones to Low A
- Apply the correct method of coordination so that you can properly complete all of the technical and
tonal requirements on your bagpipe
- Maintain a steady tempo
- Complete the ear training designated for this level
- Reproduce more complex time and rhythm exercises
- Improve your ability at writing out (copying) bagpipe music
You will also:
- Develop your ability to tune your pipe chanter so that the chordal notes are in tune with the drones
- Learn information on pipe band and instrument drill
- Learn information on highland dress, including how to clean and wear the various items
- Learn how to play and express a 2/4 quick march
- Discover how to approach learning your competition tune and how to prepare for a solo contest
- Select your Grade 5 solo competition march
- Be able to play:
- As a soloist, one 2-parted 2/4 quick march suitable for a grade 5 solo contest
- All of the standard tunes that are generally used by most pipe bands (for street
