The Kinnaird Edge Drone Reeds are the first drone reed to incorporate a patented bendable tongue into the design. This unique feature allows the piper to adjust the strength of the drone reed without the use of the bridle. This is important since it allows the piper, for the first time, to make these adjustments independently. The bridle position determines the tongue’s vibration frequency and this needs to be matched to the bore of the bagpipe. This coupling between the reed and the bore is critical to optimum sound and performance. All other reed designs require you to change this length to accommodate blowing strength. In many cases this leads to a mismatch between the acoustics of the tongue and the bore, which reduces coupling and deteriorates sound. The bendable tongue design allows a complete range of strength adjustment in one reed. The same reed can be adjusted to accommodate the blowing strength of a new piper all the way up to the strongest band players.

Kinnaird Evolution Drone Reeds - The Kinnaird Carbon Fibre Drone reed was redesigned in 2013 to improve the brightness and brilliance of the tenor reeds. The Kinnaird Evolution Drone Reeds are bright but not buzzy. The very popular Kinnaird Bass reed is largely the same as the previous design with slightly more power. Similar to the Kinnaird Carbon Fibre Reed, a metal set screw and allen key allows for easy adjustment of tuning height. The reed body and seats are glass fibre and stronger than other reeds. Pitch adjustment is with the tuning screw in the nose cone. The o-ring bridle is used to control air flow. These reeds are extremely air efficient. They are easy to set-up and offer excellent moisture resistance. The reeds have a curved carbon fibre molded tongue. If you play an easy reed or struggle with your pipes, consider the "Easy" version which come set up out of the box easier than our regular reeds. Customization available, please inquire.

Many different types of practice chanter reeds will fit in the kitchen pipes, but we find that the best tone is attained by using kitchen pipe reeds. Kitchen Pipes use the same reeds for the chanter and the drones. For those who would like some more volume for the chanter, then Abbott practice reed blends nicely with the Walsh reeds in the drones. Sold as sets of 3, or you may purchase individual reeds if preferred.

MG white mambas, as they have been nicknamed, are proven winners. The introduction of the unique paddle shaped tenor tongues to our bagpipe reeds, give improved stability and strike in. The Pipe Reed Strength Tester is a great tool for any piper. This will help you determine the strength of the pipe chanter reed that you are playing. When you have a pipe chanter reed that is a good strength for you, simply use the tester on the top of your pipe chanter, and determine the strength of the reed. Then the next time you need to order a reed, you can request the strength that will suit you best.
We use this reed strength tester for all of the reeds we sell. Here are the levels that we use. Please note the following are levels of water column inches. Soft - 27 or lower, Medium - 28 to 37, Hard - 38 or more.

Reed Absorbs -
absorb moisture or saliva that collects at the bottom of the reed in your practice chanter. Can be used in practice chanters and pipes with polypenco stocks where moisture is a problem. Packs of 12 Absorbent disks per package. Most people will notice that on hemped part of the practice chanter, that there is usually a buildup of moisture after playing. This will help collect a large part of that moisture.

The Reed block from Pipers' Choice is a great little item for easing reeds. Although it looks like a simple little device, there is a lot of though that goes into making these. By carefully placing the tips of the pipe chanter reed in the slot on the Reed block and leaving it sit overnight. You can ease the strength of the pipe chanter reed by closing the blades in a bit. It is important not to interfere with the staple on the reed while doing this. Each block comes with light sandpaper attached to it for small adjustment.
